![]() We’re also going to be using Elemental Ordnance, which means we’ll be creating elemental wells with our grenade kills. This is a super powerful tool to have in your arsenal, having a roaming thundercloud. Through Touch of Thunder, you can make the grenades more powerful by after detonating, creating a roaming thundercloud that tracks nearby targets and fires bolts of lightning at foes beneath it. Through Arc 3.0 we’re going to be using Storm grenades, which call down a focused lightning storm. Our grenades are a big part of the build. We want our abilities up and available as much as possible in Nightfalls, Lost Sectors and Raids, so we can take out the large number of ads that come our way, plus apply big DPS to the boss. Empowered means abilities have faster regen, melees and grenades do more damage, and Barricades have more hit points. Heart of Inmost Light is central to the build, which means using an ability (grenade, melee, or Barricade) empowers the other two abilities. This build has the capability to take out Overload, Barrier and Unstoppable Champions, plus we’re drawing on the power of Thunder and Lightning to supercharge out Titan via exotic weapons and armour. This Titan Arc 3.0 build is a decent build for endgame content.

I hope this article has helped you to understand base malt flavors and their use in beer brewing. However Munich can be used as a base for any style that leans on the malty side. For example the famous Marzen style from Munich uses 50% Pilsner and 50% Munich. Munich malt is often used in combination with Pilsner for many of the most popular German lagers. It is slightly sweet in flavor, but still has a clean finish. Munich malt has a caramel finish with a cookie bite to it. The light Munich malt is close in color and flavor to mild ale malt. It is often used in combination with Pilsner malt to give a light caramel finish to certain Continental lagers.įinally there is Munich malt which has a fairly wide color range (6-12.5 L) and also comes in a light Munich variation. Unlike mild ale malt, it has a clean finish and also has some caramel character without the toastiness of some other pale malts. Vienna malt is a lesser used base malt that is also just above pale malt in color (3-4 L). It is not that much different from lighter colored Munich malt in practice, though Mild malt from the UK will take on some of the complex English character due to the region where it is grown. ![]() It has a more malty finish with a slight caramel hint, but does not have a lot of toasted character. Mild ale malt is a shade darker (3.5-5.5 L) than Pale malt and can be thought of as the British version of Light Munich malt. I like the additional character of Maris Otter so I use it extensively in making English styles. More flavorful variations like “Maris Otter” are used heavily in duplicating more complex English ale styles such as real ale, bitters, browns, porters and stouts. A clean pale malt like Briess is frequently used as a base for most American ales including pale ales and IPAs. Pale malt is slightly darker than Pilsner (2-4 L), and has a clean malty aroma with slight hints of toast. Pale malt is the workhorse for many ales including as a base for most English styles. The flavors can be fairly subtle which is why it is often used in Continental lagers such as Pilsners, German lagers and some Belgian beers. Pilsner malt, being the lightest of the base malts (1.4-2.2 L) has a clean malty aroma with white bread or cracker qualities. The rule of thumb here is to try to get malt grown in the region for the style you are brewing. So one consideration when selecting a base malt is its origin, as a Pilsner malt grown in the US is likely to be much different than one grown in Germany. Barley is grown throughout the world, and like grapes often takes on the “terrior” or character of the region it is grown in. ![]() Since base malts make up a majority of the malt bill, selecting the right base malt is important for the overall flavor balance of the beer. They typically make up 80% or more of the malt bill, and provide the vast majority of fermentables in a beer. Munich malt is also often used as a base malt in Continental beers, though some consider it to be part of the kilned malt group.īase malts are used as a “base” or foundation for virtually every barley beer. The base malts are the lighted colored malts produced and this group includes: Pilsner malt, Pale malt, Vienna malt and Mild malt. It may be later kilned to make kilned or roasted malts. The seedling is allowed to grow for a few days before it is rapidly dried and to produce malted barley. Many beer styles like IPA were traditionally made with only base malts, and you can brew a large number of styles using 100% base malt.Īs I explained in my earlier article on malting and malt groups, base malts are made from raw barley which is germinated by adding water. The Base Malt Groupīase malts are the most widely used in beer brewing as they make up the vast majority of any malt bill. This week I describe base malts and their use in beer brewing. ![]() While such a narrative vacuum is not out of place in roguelikes, Southpaw very clearly tried to implement a well-realized political conflict into their fantasy universe, but it comes up too infrequently. I haven’t mentioned Skul‘s story, and that’s because I honestly don’t even know what it’s about. The slow ramp-up from feeble skeleton child to maelstrom of destruction is a sight to behold, and it’s aided by the considerable amount of environmental destruction unfolding during the game’s most chaotic moments. Enemies are getting poisoned and burned, lightning is striking every few seconds, and little familiars are buzzing around my character’s head, firing lasers and magical spells at anything that moves. Players can equip up to nine items at once, and since they all house multiple elemental properties, Skul will have transformed into a veritable whirlwind of death by the end of a run. ![]() The effects also stack, so equipping more items with the volcano attribute will lower the recharge time to 30, 20 and then a mere five seconds. An item with one point in “volcano,” for example, will cause fireballs to burst out of my character every 35 seconds. But they also carry elemental properties that give Skul passive bonuses. Most of them offer stock-standard buffs like an attack boost or an increase to the amount of money earned. Equipment, in particular, is an interesting wrinkle. Navigation through each run is much like it is in Hades as the door to each chamber hints at the type of reward it’ll offer – either gold, a new skull, or a piece of equipment – so when players are presented with multiple options, they can prioritize the goodies they’re looking for. Sometimes the random number generation goes our way, but even when it doesn’t, it can lead to brilliant moments of discovery. Each form has its own attributes and special attacks, and the fact that we can only hold two skulls at any given time presents difficult choices. The variety is through the roof, and while players will obviously develop favorites – I was partial to the rapid slash attacks of the werewolf skull myself – the joy is in being forced to adapt to the characters we’re less comfortable with when the drops aren’t favorable. The demon Yaksha is in there somewhere, as is the protagonist from Dead Cells. Pop culture staples get obvious stand-ins, like a flaming biker who attacks by swinging chains and, yeah, is definitely Ghost Rider. Gunslingers and magic casters are thrown into the mix. These skulls start out as simple weapon swaps, with Skul trading his default bone club for something like a spear or a knife, but soon the transformations become more fanciful. ![]() The result is a roguelike with dozens of playable characters. The hero, a skeleton, can swap his head out for any others that he finds along a run, and each one transforms him into an entirely new creature. There’s a jump button, an attack button and a dodge, and that’s about all there is to Skul’s basic combat, but those simple foundations are what allow Skul’s signature gimmick to flourish. It’s a side-scrolling action-platformer in which players must clear a room of all enemies, collect the reward, move on to the next chamber and repeat. On its face, despite a great soundtrack and some extraordinary pixel art, there’s little remarkable about Skul. Since they were developed concurrently, however, the simple truth is that Southpaw Games has a comparable understanding of how to keep roguelikes fresh and exciting over hours and hours of inherent repetition. The structural similarities are so visible that had this been released a couple of years later, I’d cite Hades as a naked influence. In the case of Skul: The Hero Slayer, however, the comparison is a compliment. The roguelike genre is going to be living in the shadow of Hades for some time, and I’m already resisting the urge to hold every developer to the almost unreasonable standard that Supermassive set last year. ![]() LOW The “normal” difficulty is ludicrously harsh. ![]() But our ever increasing data size compels us to buy more storage. Nowadays, most of our data lives on digital storage media including magnetic hard drives, SSDs, USB sticks, and maybe optical disks. It normally costs $50 - the current price if you purchased it via Steam. (If you were also a buyer last time, hit the comments and share your experiences!) I also recently heard from a reader who grabbed Zoolz last time around and said he was "very happy" with it. I won't say there's no risk involved, but from what I've seen of both the desktop client and the company's resume, this is a pretty stellar cloud-backup deal. The closest equivalent (with three users) would cost you $150 per year. This particular Zoolz plan derives from the company's Zoolz Home offering, though there's no exact equivalent: In addition to the 500GB/500GB setup, StackSocial's deal is good for two machines (i.e. (It takes 3-5 hours to retrieve files from cold storage.) In fact, your 1TB allotment consists of 500GB of "hot" (meaning instant, Dropbox-like) storage and 500GB of "cold" storage - the kind you use as a semi-permanent archive. There are no guarantees in life, of course, but this might be something worth considering if you're looking to, say, add a cloud component to your current local-backup setup. So, yeah, it doesn't strike me as fly-by-night. The company claims over 3 millions users and partners including Acer, Canon and Dell. Turns out UK-based Zoolz has been in the biz since 2010, mostly focusing on cold-storage technology (based on Amazon Glacier) for businesses. Here's the risk in choosing any cloud-storage service not called Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive: Can it survive the long haul? What if Zoolz' lifetime turns out to be, oh, 18 months? Certainly lots of seemingly similar services have come and gone, and this is your data we're talking about. That's $5 less than last time and several zillion less than you'd pay normally. There's nothing silly about this deal, though: Ending soon, you can get a 1TB lifetime Zoolz dual-cloud storage subscription for $29.99. I'm not saying cloud-backup service Zoolz borrowed from the original "Ghostbusters," only that it's a pretty goofy choice of moniker. (Sony Clie, anyone? I'm Watch? Microsoft Kin?) I love making fun of silly company and product names. ![]() Today's deal is a rerun, but you know how reruns roll around here: same cool product, even lower price!
